Day 33: Dylan has the sickies!

Still sweet as can be, although he wasn't feeling well at all. He's had a rough couple of days. Him and his big brother, Gavin started throwing up Monday afternoon. Gavin passed it very quickly... by that evening he was feeling much better, and had stopped throwing up. Dylan, however... he couldn't keep anything down. Around 7 pm I became concerned with how long was too long for him to continue to throw up all of what was going in... so I called his Pediatrician. She said that he needed to keep down an ounce and a half every hour! When you're watching a baby throw up several ounces a couple of times an hour, this task seems impossible, and it was for him. Through that night though, he was able to sleep OK, but was waking up every hour to puke, then eat. My heart just broke for him. It's so hard to see a little baby throw up excessively like he did. The doctor had also told me to count his wet diapers, and check his mouth for moistness, etc. When we woke up, all of that was fine- he had peed enough diapers in the last 24 hrs, his mouth was "sparkling"... but he still wasn't keeping anything down. So I called the Pediatrician's office and got him in later that morning. From when we woke up to getting him there (which was about 6 hours in between), he had had no wet diapers, his mouth was very dry and "sticky" as I would describe it, and he was burning up. :( Not to mention he was totally out of it... he didn't care that they checked his temp rectally... he didn't care that the doctor held him- he looked like he was half asleep. He also had no color, and he weighed 1/2 a pound less than he did on the 20th of Jan. Well, we went to another room and got situated, and they drew blood and started IV fluids... he hardly fussed. After the first "round" of IV fluids he was starting to wiggle around again, and he looked up at me a lot, but he was still pretty out of it. They gave him another round of IV fluids, and when he finished that I got a small grin out of him! We went home with the same instructions I was told the previous night. He has not kept any breast milk down. So we've got him sipping water/pedialyte from a dropper. He's getting about an ounce and a half an hour now, and I'd say since late last night he's been keeping about half of what he takes in down, and since 5 am this morning, he hasn't gotten sick. So hopefully, he's on the mend and he'll be feeling better come tonight or tomorrow morning. His poor little tummy... my husband and I just cried for him last night. :(

  3. Aww, I have tears in my eyes for you. I remember going through with the same thing with Jace, it's so scary when they're tiny :( I hope he's getting better.

  4. It's just the worst thing to watch your babies be sick! Even when the grow into young men...it still breaks your heart!

  6. I am totally tearing up for you too! That second picture says it all....so sad when they are sick. Thank goodness you trusted your gut and scheduled an appointment even though at the time you made it he was still hydrated enough. Hope he's on the mend!

  7. I would marry IV's if I could. They've always helped both my babies whenever they got dehydrated. It's so tough watching them go through that at such a young age. Hope he continues to mend.
